It varied, but many fought on through grassroots movements designed to drum up support for civil rights reform by making speeches, doing marches, and doing riskier things such as sitting in segregated restaurants or using "whites only" facilities to make a point. Martin Luther King, perhaps the most well known civil rights advocate, fought for equality during the Cold War by doing a lot of that.

Joined the communist party
Not that anyone could blame them, at that point, they're willing to do anything for a change
