340 = 2 ( 70+ 2x)
170 = 70 + 2x
100 = 2x
50 = x

x+ 70 = 120

The smaller side is 50 yd
The larger side is 120 yd

Answer with Step-by-step explanation:

Let the width of rectangle be x

The length is 70 yd longer than the width.

i.e. Length= 70+x

The perimeter of a rectangular field is 340 yd.

We know that perimeter of rectangle= 2(Length+Width)

340= 2(70+x+x)

Dividing both sides by 2, we get

170= 70+x+x

i.e. 170= 70+2x

Subtracting both sides by 70, we get

100=2x

or 2x=100

Dividing both sides by 2, we get

x=50

Hence, Width of rectangle= 50 yd

Length= 70+50 yd

= 120 yd

Hence, smaller side is width of rectangle= 50 yd

and larger side is length of rectangle= 120 yd
