Glycolysis occurs in the cytosol of cells and is an anaerobic process. Glycolysis is the breakdown of glucose by enzymes, releasing energy and pyruvic acid and occurs only in the absence of oxygen. Cytosol is the aqueous component of the cytoplasm of a cell, within which various organelles and particles are suspended.
