The shape of star dunes is mostly due to variable wind directions. Due to the fact that the wind is blowing from many sides and hitting the dune, the sand accumulates in such a way that it forms star dunes. The amount of vegetation, variable wind speeds, and the amount of sand do not affect the formation of star dunes, but rather the direction of the winds does.
