One hypothesis regarding the extinction of dinosaurs is that a meteor hit the earth causing an explosion so powerful that dust blocked the sun. Why would this have caused a mass extinction?

The explosion itself would be so powerful that all the dinosaurs in its wake would have died. However, if the dust blocked out the sun then the plants would die off, and the herbivores would have no food. The carnivores would still be able to eat the herbivores, but they would quickly be extinct because of this or died before the carnivores got to them. Hope this helps!
