They are both sources of energy. They are almost exactly the same however ATP-Adenosine Triphosphate has one more phosphate group than ADP-Adenosine Diphosphate.

When a cell needs energy is breaks off the last phosphatein ATP, releasing energy transforming into ADP. ATP and ADP contain chemical energy stored, both of them contain phosphate groups that gives them this charachteristic.
