when you simplify 4/8 you get 1/2 so it`s the same distance from 0 and 1

No. When Sydney says that 4/8 is closer to 0 than to 1, she is incorrect.
4/8 is the number that's exactly in the perfect middle between 0 and 1.
It's distance from 0 and its distance from 1 are precisely the same.
