Rising action, climax, and falling action are all part of the plot.

A plot is a causal sequence of events, the "why" for the events that take place in the story. The plot draws the reader into the character's lives and helps him reader understand the choices that the characters make.

A plot is made up of: the exposition, the rising and falling action, which are part of the climax, and finally the resolution.
