The economy was beset by massive inflation and debt. A southern woman said she brought her money to the store in her shopping bags and came home with stuff she bought in her purse.
Trade with europe wasn't lacking but reduced. A lot of war supplies had to be imported. Battles didn't destroy much farm land although raids and plundering late in the war, by Sherman etc did.
