The roman empire was about 70% as large as the united states. why was the communication within this area such a serious problem?

In such a large area, and little technology, communication was slow and at times ineffective. Much of the communication was done by word of mouth so some information would be lost. While today we have cell phones, email, and phone calls, which are direct and quick.
