How does the speed of a river help determine what type of material the river carries

Well the river may flow slow because it has rocks slowing it down, it might go fast if it doesn't have anything in it.

How it determines wht type of material there is is that if the river river flows smoothly the materials will be less taken by the current and put into pockets under the water.if it is fast the materials will flow faster causing it to not stop under the water.im not sure if I'm 100 % correct but hey....
