How can the excessive use of fertilizers affect biodiversity if it is washed into the river

Things like fertilizers usually contain nitrogen. Nitrogen improves the conditions for plant growth and these plants overpopulate in rivers and lakes and take oxygen away from other life forms and these animals and plants start dying. This reduces biodiversity.
