Rudolf Virchow was trying to prove through his work that
spontaneous generation didn't happen.
He claimed this was not the case, and that organisms cannot arise from nonliving matter. He extended previous claims that there had to be a living thing to give birth to another one to state that the only source for a living cell was another living cell.
