three teammates had different point totals at the girls basketball game. to determine the number of point Effie had, multiply Toni's point by three, subtract 8, then multiply the difference by 2. to determine the number of points Linda had, add 9 to Toni's points and divide the sum by 3. how many points did each girl have if Effie scored 9 more than Toni and Linda combined?

Let's Toni's point be x.

Effie = 3*x - 8, 2*(3x - 8) = 2*3x - 2*8 = 6x - 16

Linda = x + 9, (x + 9) / 3

Effie scored 9 more than Toni and Linda combined,

Means Effie - (sum of Toni and Linda) = 9

(6x - 16) - (x + (x+9)/3) = 9

6x - 16 - x - (x + 9)/3 = 9

Multiply both sides of the equation by 3.

3*6x - 3*16 - 3*x - 3*(x+9)/3 = 9*3

18x - 48 - 3x - (x + 9) = 27

18x - 3x - 48 - x - 9 = 27

18x - 3x - x = 27 + 48 + 9

14x = 84 Divide by x

x = 84/14

x = 6

Recall Toni's point = x = 6

Effie = 6x - 16 = 6*6 - 16 = 36 - 16 = 20

Linda = (x + 9) / 3 = (6 + 9)/3 = 15/3 = 5

Toni = 6 points, Effie = 20 points, Linda = 5 points

I hope this explains it.
