"Of" means times (multiplication). 15% of 500 is 75. 15% of 75 is 11.25. 15% of 11.25 is 1.6875. 45% of 500 is 225.

Well it's repeated addition of 15% three times which is the same as 15% * 3 which is 45%. Which Is the reason why 15% of 15% of 15% relates to 45% of 500.
