I think that Mrs. Auld followed her husband's advice to stop teaching Douglass to read in My Bondage and My Freedom because B. WIVES WERE EXPECTED TO OBEY THEIR HUSBANDS.

Douglass was a slave and according to Mr. Auld, slaves do not need to know how to read because they will not be able to perform their tasks well as a slave.
