over the counter products can easily be purchased anywhere without a doctors prescription (ex. medicine at wallgreens) and prescription medications have to be approved by a doctor specifically for what is wrong with you

Over the counter medications are medicines that the FDA has decided that you can mostly use at your own discretion. (You still need to read the directions and exercise caution.) and Prescription medications are medicines that must be provided under a Doctor.
