During the hydraulic fracturing extraction, a rock is fractured using liquid that is under high pressure, and the liquid is usually water with other additives such as sand or aluminum. You shoot this into a crack and it expands the crack until the rock breaks, and this lets the gas flow more freely. The additives prevent the crack from closing.
