Mid ocean ridges form when tectonic plates spread apart.

===============

Mid ocean ridges form when tectonic plates pull apart from each other along rift zones, such as the Mid-Atlantic ridge. This occurs due to upwelling currents in the mantle. Molten rock, basaltic lava, rises from below to fill the space between the receding plates, forming long undersea mountain ranges.
