The war began when the Confederates attacked Union soldiers at Fort Sumter, South Carolina on April 12, 1861. The war ended in Spring, 1865. Robert E. Lee threw in the towel of the last major Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865.

if u are wondering what shot started it, no one knows cause the the soldiers couldn't tell who did it like the militia, no one knows which shot specifically started it though
