the same way any other pioneers did The biggest difference in the way Mormons grew their crops was in their use of irrigation. They were some of the first people in the western US to divert river water through a complex series of canals to water the growing crops. At first this was with simple flood irrigation, but later on they learned to use less water through the use of furrow irrigation.
