Theatrical performances were considered civic ceremonies in ancient Greek, therefore the state paid salaries to actors. Additional expenses of productions are paid by producers on a rotating basis. Producers are normally appointed by lot in July to playwright, giving them ample time to prepare the play for the festivals that come up during winter and spring.
