Foliated metamorphic rocks such as gneiss, phyllite,schist, and slate have a layered or banded appearance that is produced by exposure to heat and directed pressure. Non-foliated metamorphic rocks such ashornfels, marble, quartzite, and novaculite do not have a layered or banded appearance
