You first combine all like terms: 4y + 8y = 12y
Its now 12y - 16 = -4
Move the -16 to the other side: REMEMBER: WHEN YOU MOVE A NUMBER FROM ONE SIDE OF THE EQUAL SIGN TO THE OTHER, YOU FLIP THE SIGN
12y = -4 + 16
y = 1

First add 16 to -16 and -4
4y+8y=12
Add 4y and 8y together
