I'm having trouble explaining and working how the sum of 12.6, 3.1, and 5.4 is greater than 20. Help please?

when you add the decimals together, you get 1.1 and then you can add the whole numbers together 12+3+5= 20 plus the 1.1 from before 20+1.1= 21.1
