Buddhism became the state religion during the LĂ˝ Dynasty, which lasted from 1009 until 1225. All kings during this dynasty professed and sanctioned Buddhism as the state religion.

Emperor Le-Anh-Ton (1138 - 1175) gave the religion recognition as the official state religion and granted it high privileges.
