Why is 1697 considered a "turning point in the history of the black population in America"? What had this change resulted in by 1760? On a related note, what was the "triangular trade," and what does it reveal about colonial economics?

The mid-1690s marked a turning point in the history of the black population in America because the Royal Africa Company lost its monopoly. The Royal African Company was a mercantile company set up by the Stuart family and London merchants to trade along the west coast of Africa.
