How do the presidents power to recommend or veto legislation and to grant reprieves and pardons illustrate the principle of checks and balances?

When a president vetos a legislative branch, he is making sure the legislative branch is not being too unruly. The president also appoints Supreme Court justices which keeps the judicial branch in check.
