In colonial America, the House of Burgesses was significant because its leader was the only elected governor in the colonies.

The House of Burgesses was established in 1642-43 by the General Assembly, the legislature of Virginia. Since this house was created, the General Assembly became bicameral. In 1776, the colony of Virginia became independent and the House of Burgesses turnt into the House of Delegates. Because of this legacy, the Virginia House of Delegates is known as the oldest continuous legislative body in the New World.
