The judge, (believing the boy to be innocent), acquitted him.

What kind of phrase is italicized?

What does it modify?

"believing the boy to be innocent" is an Appositive phrase you can still read it fine like "The judge acquitted him." and "believing the boy to be innocent" modifies the Judge
