What must happen to particles in a liquid for it to turn into gas?

Energy (most commonly directly added as heat) is added to a liquid.  This causes the molecules/particles to move more quickly, making them break apart and form into a gas.  Instead of directly adding heat to the substance, pressure can be added, which, according to the ideal gas laws, as pressure goes up, temperature also goes up.
