Raise taxes in the colonies after The Great War when Britain was in debt. The Stamp Act meant that the colonies had to pay a tax on all of their documents if they wanted them to be official and viable.

The British parliament passed the stamp act 1765 in order to boost their economy because of the massive debt they suffered from, due to the French and Indian War. This war drained its resources and thus passed the stamp act in order to recover and boost their economy.

The stamp act was imposed on all American colonists who were required to pay taxes on all printed papers. The colonists opposed it all the way.
