Islam was spread by word of mouth. Also many of the Imams(leaders) sent out people to spread the word in different regions of the world. Islam in India had a negative effect as it caused many disputes between the Muslims and the Hindus. A nation was divided. But thankfully now they live in harmony in most parts.
