Why are metalliods often used in electronics

Metalloids show the properties that are midway between metals and non metals. Silicon is a metalloid and for this reason it is abundantly used in computer chip industry. Silicon and other metalloid elements are building blocks of electronics because they are cheap, easily available, economical.
