The first enslaved people were brought in the Virginia colony in 1619. There status was not different form the white indentured servants. By the end of seventeenth century population of blacks slaves grew and the law recognised a new form of bondage based on race that came to be known as chattel slavery

The introduction of slavery the New England colonies helped in the expansion of the small farms into large agricultural production. They were primarily employed in the farms.
