Does the atmosphere help prevent meteor showers?

yes because by time the meteor gets through the atmosphere it's been shrunken and it's alot smaller then it would be if there was no atmosphere

Pretty much, yes. They burn up in the atmosphere, usually far higher than the ozone layer.
