The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 prohibited slavery in the North of the Ohio River so it created an imaginary line in the US territory. It was the first federal law that addressed the slavery issue. The Ordinance also established a new Government for the Northwest Territory and prohibited slavery into those territories.
