If plants need oxygen for cellular respiration, then why do they release oxygen into the atmosphere?

If plants need oxygen for cellular respiration, they release oxygen into the atmosphere because more oxygen is being produced from the process of photosynthesis than the plants need for cellular respiration. Hope this answers the question. Have a nice day.
