There are two unknowns in the problem statement above so we need two equations in order to solve this. The firs expression is that the sum of two numbers is 50.

x + y = 50

The second expression is that the one number is 10 less than three times the other number.

x = 10 - 3y

ok so its a guessing game

I say its 40+10 because

40-10{one # is 10 less than)=30
10(3){three times the other number}=30

so 40+10=50
