Even though you may be led to believe that the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua got that name because there are a lot of mosquitoes there, it could not be farther from the truth - in fact, this has nothing to do with mosquitoes. This coast got its name after the local natives who lived there, who were called the Miskito. So when this name was translated into English, it was called the Mosquito Coast.
