What is the difference between lateral area and total area?

In general, lateral area does not include the base of the shape.

An example would be: a cone, the surface area is ALL of the area on the outside of the cone. This would be the circle on the bottom + the curved surface around the cone. The lateral area would not include the circular bottom. For a cylinder, the lateral surface is the curved side, not including the circular bottom or top.

Hoped this helped!
