" 2.5 times a number 'n' " = 2.5n
" 2.5n is subtracted from 6.1 " . . . . that's 6.1 - 2.5n
" the result is -11.4 " . . . . . so
6.1 - 2.5n = -11.4
Add 11.4 to each side : 17.5 - 2.5n = 0
Add 2.5n to each side: 17.5 = 2.5n
Divide each side by 2.5 : 7 = n
