What causes the northern and southern halves of the planet to experience winter and summer at opposite times?

When one side is facing the sun, the other is facing the darkness, so, when it's Winter in the northern half, it's Summer in the southern half. Does that make sense?

The angle of the Earth on its axis causing the sun to beam on the Northern and Southern Hemispheres differently.
