NATO was formed in 1949 and one of it's main goals was the potential danger from the countries from behind the "steel curtain". The communist countries formed an opposite pact called Warsaw Pact in 1955 and those steps lead the two opposite blocs to the Cold War, which formally lasted until perestroika in Russia in the end of the 1980's..
