In order to solve the equation −3x − 6 = 5, the first step is to

A. add 6 to both sides
B. divide by 5 on both sides
C. subtract 6 from both sides
D. multiply by 5 on both sides

(I believe it is A.)

A is the correct answer in order to isolate the variable you have to get rid of six and in order to do so you have to add six to both sides.
