Hutus and Tutsis are the two main ethnic groups that occupy Rwanda. The Hutu are by far the majority group, as 90% of Rwandans are Hutus.

Culturally, it is an artificial division, based more on social class than on ethnicity, given that there are no linguistic or cultural differences between Hutus and Tutsis. Historically, however, there were physical differences, mainly in average height. Hutus and Tutsis share most of the same religion and language (most are Catholic and Bantu).

The inequalities between the rights of racial groups were not so extreme, but they were important. For the Tutsi, the Hutu were basically considered as lower class workers.
