the crash from the "meteor" caused a lot of flames and ruins which are all trapped and at the way bottom. lava is formed because all the heat is being trapped in a small area which then melts through the ground and when lava meets water it forms a mountain/island like structure which uses up water and the island goes up which why you see lots of mountains and small islands.
