What role did religious differences play in the rivalries among european nations in the new world?

Well, many colonists on the mayflower for example, left England to escape religious persecution. They settled in Plymouth but in Jamestown and other settlements, the settlers may still have had some hostility against the Plymouth colonists. I think most of the rivalry among European nations in the new world was mostly over land, money, trade, and who gets what.
