a = x + y ÷ 2
We multiply both sides by 2
That is,
2 × a = x + y ÷ 2 × 2
We get
2a = x + y
Since we are solving for y, we move x to the other side of the equation
So we have
2a - x = y
Therefore,
y = 2a - x
