First, find the common denominator which in this case is 8.
4x2=8
1x8=8
Then, multiply the numerator 1 by 2 and the numerator 3 by 1.
2/8 + 3/8=5/8 you can't simplify so the answer is
5/8.

one fourth equals 2/8 because of conversion factors. 2/8 plus 3/8 equals 5/8.
